Here we are sharing all the process involved in constructing a garment right from making pattern to finishing garment along with reference images to make you understand in a better way.

Fabric: select a fabric which has good fall rather than using little thick and stiff fabrics.

Lets check out process below on how to make salwar pants:

Drafting of salwar pant

Measurements required: (in inches)

Length of Salwar - From waist to ankle.

Hip Round - Around the hip at the curve point.

Crotch Round - Around the crotch from front wasitline to back wasitline [refer mage below].

Waist to Hips - from waistline down to hip position.

Ankle -Around the ankle.

Drafting Steps:

Front and Back

1-2 = Length of Salwar - Waist band width (waist to hip length) + 2" (ease) + ½" (seam allowance)

2-3 = 1.5" for Bottom Fold

2-7 = 1/2 Round Ankle + 1" Seam

3-8 = Same as 2-7 + 1”, Join 8-7.

1-4 =1/2 width of material OR ½ Hip + 2"Ease.

4-5 = 1/2 Round Crotch - Waist band width (i.e. 8") + 1" (ease) + 1" (seam allowance)

5-6 = Go inwards by 1 to 1.5"

6-7 = Join with a slant line and 5-6 with a slight outward curve (refer image)

Waist Band Drafting Steps

1-2 = Waist to Hips + 2" (cord case) + 1" (seam allowance)

1-3 = 1/2 Round Hips + 3 to 4" (ease)

Join 2-4 & 3-4 with straight lines

Some Points to Consider:

Ø Fabric Required 44"width 2mtrs, if its 36" width 2.5mtrs.

Ø stretch Fabric diagonally to align the warp & weft.

Ø Iron the fabric always to remove crease, prior to marking and place draft.

Ø If you are a beginner, prefer making the Paper draft and then pin it to fabric.

Sewing Steps

- Start with attaching 2no's waist band, lets consider A&B, stitch A&B together front and back side keeping right side of the fabric facing each other.

- Finish top of the waistband by folding .5" and fold .75" to inside and stitch to insert drawstring.

- Once the waistband is ready bring both joint together and place notch on both corner which is on fold as center.

- Now keep the waist band aside and take lower part of both legs and finish bottom round. stick interlining band ironing it on wrong side of the fabric, fold and stitch.

- After finishing bottom, join both back side of leg parts together and from center give 1 ½" pleats on either side by pinning or with dummy stitch. now keep this along with back side of waistband and trace the notch mark which is given at sides of waistband.[understand, from center of back side will have 1" pleat on either side and rest will be plain until sides]. from this side mark start giving pleats till the front joint of waistband length. pin up the pleats and run temporary stitch at hold pleats firmly.

- Now join both side front crotch line together and turn the stitch joints inside.

- Take waist band and turn wrong side top surface and insert the leg part inside this waist band by matching front and back center joints together[ whereas the waistband drawstring fold will be facing towards floor or bottom of leg parts].

- Stitch by leaving ½" seam allowance. bring waistband up after joining, now u can see salwar pant attached with waistband. now join the sides of each leg part by turning wrong side up and start stitching from bottom of pant from one end to another end by leaving 1" inside[as seam allowance]. after this completion insert draw string inside fold of waist band from top side.

- Finish pant by ironing on the pleats by adjusting and side folds and at waist band joints and folds.

- Now your salwar pant is ready to wear.
